Curtis Ware

Dan Webber

Curtis has been backpacking/ canoeing/ biking/ camping for over 40 years. Over the years, he has accumulated over 1000 nights of camping (that’s a lot of sleeping on rocks) with the Boy Scouts while serving on summer camp staffs, Philmont Scout Ranch, and serving as Cubmaster and Scoutmaster.  Curtis has been in Scouting since he was seven (3 if you count the years as a tag-a-long when his mother was a Girl Scout Leader).

Because he’s an engineer, he keeps up with the ever changing materials that have made backpacking lighter, thus the change to Ultralight Backpacking.  Besides backpacking, Curtis has also given up his heavy canoe for a fleet of kayaks and spends the spring in search of floatable water.

Curtis’s main job with the WFA classes is to keep an ever watchful eye on Dan to keep the cost of the course as cheap as possible.  Dan is always looking for ways to make the course as realistic as he can.  Conversations like: “No Dan, we can’t use real blood” and “Yes Dan, I agree we can make the scenarios more realistic if we bring a tanker of water in, but it will cost too much” can often be heard as we prepare for upcoming courses.

While not the world traveler like Dan, Curtis’s involvement in Scouting and love of the outdoors has taken him to many places throughout the U.S.  Curtis took his first WFA course thru NOLS and continued interest led him to “twist” Dan’s arm into taking the Wilderness First Aid Instructor training at the Philmont Scout Ranch in May of 2010.

Dan got hooked on backpacking after his first trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in 2006 (70 miles).  Somewhere between that time and his second trek in 2008 (110 miles), he fell under the influence of Curtis Ware, a dedicated “lite” backpacker.

Even though Dan does not cut half the handle off his toothbrush and then drill holes the the stub that remains like Curtis, he has lightened his gear dramatically and is always on the lookout for lighter and stronger chairs that he can take when backpacking.

Dan is constantly envisioning ways to make the training scenarios more realistic and it’s up to Curtis to try to keep him reigned in; a task which Curtis has found himself woefully unprepared for up to this point.

In younger days Dan was a foreign exchange student in Chile, backpacked from Central America to the the souther tip of South America, taught hang Gliding in Arkansas, worked 3 years in Africa with the Peace Corps, and has been involved in Scouting as a leader and advisor for the past 17 years.

Dan received his Wilderness First Aid Instructor training at Philmont Scout Ranch along with Curtis in the first joint national training with Red Cross in May o f 2010.
